Motivation – Finding your “Why”

In this blog, Coach Kirsty shares how she stays motivated and her reasons "why"...

We all have days when we’re feeling great. When we run, it feels effortless. On the

bike, it feels as though we’re riding without a chain. Those are the days that we love

to train, right? But there are other days that feel like a struggle. We look around and

see our mates smashing out their sessions, hitting PBs, achieving goals – and while

we’re stoked for them, inside we can feel demoralised and motivation to train can be

low.

As athletes, we all know that consistency is key. So how do we pick ourselves up,

regain our motivation and get back on track?

The key to motivation is finding your “why”. That thing that drives you on. The

reason you started this journey in the first place.

Your "why" doesn’t have to be a big, lofty goal—it can absolutely be something

simple. The key is that it is meaningful to you. Whether it's a grand vision or a

smaller, more immediate purpose, your "why" should connect to something that

motivates you personally.

It may be that you're inspired to take on a challenge in memory of a loved one. Or

you’re committed to raising money for a charity close to your heart. You may be

looking to gain and maintain fitness so you have energy to play with your kids /

grandkids. Or seeking that coveted GB age-grouper vest.

For me it’s really simple – it’s the joy of being out on the trails, soaking in the

environment, catching a glimpse of a deer or a squirrel. (And the post-run cake,

obvs!)

Over the past few weeks, running has been a challenge for me – I’ve felt slow and

lethargic, that every step is a struggle. I’ve been loving the bike, but it’s been a

mental battle to put on my running shoes and get out of the door. So today I

reminded myself “why” I’m doing this, grabbed my trail shoes and headed for the

hills. No worries about hitting a certain pace. Just me, some great views and the

muddy trails. Bliss.

So take some time to reconnect with your “why”. It will help you push through the

tough days and keep building consistency towards your goal.
